A laptop that is too hot can burn you. Sony recalled thousands of VAIO laptops due to potential burn hazards. There are also indications that working with a hot laptop on your lap can cause male infertility.
Regarding the device itself, operating a laptop at very high temperatures leads to hardware component failures (video cards, motherboards, memory modules, hard drives, and more are all susceptible to damage) and decreases the life of your computer. It can also be a fire hazard; faulty laptops have set houses on fire.
